E-commerce Product Research Checklist
A practical starter checklist for evaluating product ideas before spending money on inventory, advertising or supplier commitments.
1. Problem & Use Case
- Does the product solve a clear customer problem or improve convenience?
- Is the use case easy to explain in one sentence?
- Can the product be demonstrated visually?
2. Demand Signals
- Search for recurring demand across relevant marketplaces and search channels.
- Check whether demand appears seasonal or consistent.
- Review customer questions and reviews to understand real buying intent.
3. Competition
- Identify direct competitors and alternative solutions.
- Compare pricing, positioning, reviews and visible weaknesses.
- Look for a realistic differentiation angle instead of copying existing listings.
4. Supplier & Cost Review
- Compare multiple suppliers where possible.
- Check MOQ, sample options, lead time, packaging and shipping conditions.
- Estimate total landed cost—not only product cost.
5. Margin & Risk
- Estimate selling price, platform fees, fulfilment, advertising and returns.
- Leave room for price changes and unexpected costs.
- Avoid relying on unrealistic profit assumptions.
6. Compliance & Restrictions
- Check marketplace restrictions and category requirements.
- Review safety, labelling, trademark and import considerations where applicable.
- Use qualified legal/tax/compliance advice where needed.
7. Final Go / No-Go Questions
- Can I clearly explain why a customer would choose this product?
- Do the numbers still work after realistic costs?
- Do I understand the main operational and compliance risks?
- Do I have enough evidence to test the idea responsibly?
